I'm no expert but my understanding is 2d is shot in straight lines to reveal coal targets to be further explored with the drill.
3d would be used when you already have a sub basin and want to create a coal model to define the size and perimeter of it, it will reveal the dips and thickness, and that data from the 3d seismic can be used with the data from the drills and gas content to define the contingent resource numbers for that sub basin
