John 5:39 - Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Had they read the right scriptures, accepted and abided in them, eternal life could be obtained.

Eating the flesh, drinking the blood = eating and drinking the word of God, the message.
John 4:14 - But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
Jesus was not literally going to give water, but the word of God (John 12:49), which naturally includes all about Jesus.
Same meaning for the bread and wine, giving the word of God and message.
