Not a dumb question at all. Most stock loan agreements provide for either side to terminate the loan by returning or recalling stock whenever they want, subject to standard settlement cycles (that is, T+2 minimum). Otherwise the borrow can remain outstanding pretty much for as long as the borrower keeps paying the borrow fee and lodges the necessary collateral.
