Yes likelihood was that it wouldn’t be a great vaccine since our immunity to these sorts of viruses have never been robust. But it certainly was a marvel that they were able to come up with vaccines which were reasonably effective against the original strain and in such a sort time frame. That the third shot has a benefit (and it does) is a bit of a bonus, like sitting an exam you didn’t study for but still passed. Overall I agree this isn’t a great vaccine but it’s the only one we have. And it really needs to be updated for the current strains. Hopefully by the time that happens a new variant hasn’t appeared which evades the update.
