Technically Australia wasn't invaded on 26 Jan 1788. Australia was "settled", not to downplay the impact of this but an invasion is lawful and the way Australia was settled was infact a myth = terra nulius entre Mabo and the reason for a Native Title act. I find it difficult to believe the traditional owners in the Pilbara are still having to fight for their land rights and if it not for the Iron ore the Australian economy would be very different.

This settlement was IMO far worse than an invasion could have been where hopefully a treaty (before too many lives were lost) may well have been signed e.g NZ, rather we had more than a century of massacres( Forrest creek in WA during the 1920s) abhorrent mistreatment and a normalization towards my people...yes Im Aboriginal and manage my own $1M portfolio.

I don't dismiss the alcoholism, the imprisonment rates, the domestic violence amongst my people....but from what we know there was a time when these didn't occur. Positive discrimination/opportunity is needed to lift people up out of the quagmire many find themselves. There is hope with an increasing number of younger Aboriginal people but there are also areas where it seems despite all efforts little change is occuring.

Im as Aussie as hills hoist or meat pie....love Australia and its people even liked some of the opinions expressed here. I also don't have answers but Im certain changing the date is part of a journey towards reconciliation, inclusion and acknowledging past injustices (google paul keatings redfern speech) which is needed to heal people perhaps giving them the hope they need.
