REX make money by charging eye-watering fares on regional routes. They have 60 Saab 340 turbo-props which they have no trouble filling. The capital city routes allow REX to transport passengers from the capitals to interstate regional airports using one carrier. eg Melbourne to Sydney via a 737 then Sydney to Orange via a Saab 340. They are not trying to directly compete with QAN/Jetstar.
