And in good times, everyone wants to jump on board, the multiple punters are prepared to pay for $1 of profit increases. As the share price increases, the punters are proved 'correct' not because they did a fundamental review of the underlying business, but because the share price increased.
In other words, the punters were 'right' because the share price went up.
This is fine if one was a trader, but the punters instead of realising they were traders, thought they were investors.
I love the stock market, its a great transfer of wealth if one is patient enough
