Ukraine was never a part of the 'collapsing Anglo empire'. However, it was a part of the 'collapsed soviet empire'.
Imagine the USA collapsed, and the various states declared independence (as happened in the USSR). And some of these states (e.g., Florida, Texas, Utah, etc) align with Russia. Washington DC decides to annex Virginia. But the Russians are so powerful and entrenched in the region that they openly arm the Virginians and apply pressure on them to fight Washington. And then - the final indignity - politicians in Washington DC even agree to attend talks with the Russians government to resolve their 'internal' conflict.
Yep, this is what's happening.
