"Russia has a lot of places they could do these "exercises"..... there needs to be a strategic reason they are so situated."

Maybe Russia should always first ask the White House and the Pentagon as to where they are allowed to place troops within Russian borders ?

I believe the reason the Russian troops are so positioned is because the Ukraine government began making very direct threats to retake Crimea late last year, which the White house then used as "proof" that Russia was preparing to invade Ukraine.

I think the US wants Russia to attack Ukraine. It would suck Russia into a costly quagmire and trigger the sanctions.
I believe the US/NATO aim is to bankrupt and break up Russia into easily manageable pieces like they did to Yugoslavia.
All major wars are about resources, markets cheap labor and spheres of influence.

With Russia and China broken up into regional statelets America would achieve it's global ambitions, it's "unipolar moment".

Of course that millions even tens of millions people would lose their lives is not of the slightest concern to pentagon war planners.

"Speaking in his annual address to the Ukrainian parliament on Wednesday, Zelenskiysaidthe return of Crimea to Ukraine following Moscow’s 2014 annexation of the peninsula should be the country’s main goal — but stopped short of saying it should be retaken by force."
