Silver is a vital component in many every day items, particularly electronics.
So, assuming there was a kinetic war and we were starting up a military production, we'd need as much silver as possible
That said, can Australia even produce anything these days? We'd probably roll over and have to resort to guerilla fighting in the bush.
The communists would eventually be operating the mines, and they aren't renowned for their efficacy or sustainability (probably would be using pick axes within a year)
