Starbust, You asked for my suggestions to make a difference;
I think we could make enormous improvements to our environment and economy at the same time. nfortunately it would take moral fibre which is rare in our political system. Unfortunately we have caused our politicians to have a three year view and to juggle a gaggle of special interest groups. At the risk of offending a great number of people I will lay out my plan for when I am elected king.
1) Build a uranium enrichment plant and disposal facility at Roxby Downs. 2) Build around 12 x 2,000 MW Nuclear power stations. Situated at Mt Isa, Gladstone Qld, SEQ, Newcastle,Lucas Hights,Geelong, Loy Yang, Portsland, Wyhalla, Bunbury, Kwinana and Port Hedland. In some cases these would supply steam to industry and in others electricity. While I am a staunch advocate of free enterprise I think that these should be developed on defence dept land under federal legislation and operated by the government for 10 years then sold off. 3) Adopt the Bradley plan to turn the rivers of the North East inward, replenish the Murray and develop a food bowl. This would require a government willing to stare down the local interests of those who love the tinkle of the rivers flowing into the sea.
These two moves would take the courage and ingenuity that the Snowey did in its day. Replace the coal industry with a Uranium industry. Help feed the world. Reduce pollution and give a massive reductuion in CO2 Emissions. If the Green Lobby is serious about AGW it is time they let go of the 1960's folk songs and embraced Nuclear Power like France, USA and the rest of the world. It would be a sweeping change to australian industry. I await the howls! Bacci
