What you don't say about Delta and Omicron is that they both arose from earlier variants and so both are able to mix parts of their genetic code.

Virologists say vigilance is critical as something truly nasty can arrive without much warning.

That's why we should vaccinate before a more lethal variant starts circulating the globe.
