NATO is a defensive alliance against attacks from hostile countrieson one of the members.

That is a "Narrow" Self-Righteous View of the World.

Tell me:

1. When did Yugoslavia ATTACK any NATO member?

2. When did Iraq (1st and 2nd War) ATTACK any NATO member?

3. When did Syria ATTACK any NATO member?

4. When did Libya ATTACK any NATO member?

Now, if only they did exactly as you suggest, then other countries (not part of NATO) around the world, wouldn't need a military force.

Btw, the Russia's military doctrine is also "Defensive".

So is the US - that is why they have a Department of Defense.
