Maybe you should read up a bit on Taiwan. Their rapid economic growth ‘the Taiwan miracle’ which began in the early 60’s, was under a military dictatorship. Democracy didn’t come till the 80’s/90’s.

Since then their GDP has grown by approximately 1,000% and their GDP per capita is triple that of China. So yeah, there's that.
