Keep in mind that since the 1700's the Baltic states were part of the Russian Empire , independent from 1918 to 1940 , and then occupied from 1940 to 1990 [a quite oppressive one].

If the Baltic states take revenge against the present Russian population for the sins of 1940 to 1990 , then they give Putin the base and excuse for action.
Putin is a thug , but a smart one, who will happily use nationalism for his geopolitical aims.
