Hunter Biden appeared on CBS This Morning to promote his new memoir Beautiful Things and addressed many issues revealed in his book. His struggles with addiction and an alleged investigation into a missing handgun by Secret Service came up, but it was his laptop that is most likely the most newsworthy bit of information to emerge.
In an early excerpt of his interviews with CBS which aired Friday, Hunter Biden acknowledged the laptop in question could be his, which was picked up by many in conservative media as evidence that this still confusing story has more validity than early skeptics would believe.
CBS’ Anthony Mason flatly asked Biden if the laptop was his — to which he replied that he could not remember either way. Reasonable people might find that hard to believe, but as Hunter explains, the timing of these events occurred during a deep struggle with crack cocaine, from which he is now in recovery.
“You read the book, and you’ll realize that I wasn’t keeping tabs on possessions very well for about a four-year period of time,” Hunter explained after saying that he legitimately couldn’t recall dropping a laptop off at this particular repair shop.
The missing laptop was a massive political story in October of 2020, just weeks before the general election that saw President Joe Biden defeat former President Donald Trump. The laptop is reportedly still in possession of the FBI, but a hard drive purporting to contain contents of the missing computer was given to the New York Post by Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani. The contents were then published, including several very embarrassing images of Hunter Biden with a crack pipe, as well as screenshots of emails that have still not been verified since there was no metadata included.
The laptop’s origins’ backstory was that Hunter Biden had dropped off the laptop at a Delaware computer repair store. The owner. John Paul Mac Isaac then contacted the FBI and then reached out to Giuliani because he said that the proper authorities had failed him.
The NY Post report about the contents of the laptop led to their own secondary scandals, which included a temporary Twitter ban for sharing “hacked materials,” which was later reversed and led to a separate debate about political censorship buy “Big Technology” and alleged cancel culture. Other news outlets tried to prove the veracity of all of the contents on the hard drive but were denied access by Giuliani. Mediaite has reached out to the former Mayor of New York City but has not yet heard back.
In March of this year, a report from the Intelligence Community was declassified that revealed all US intelligence agencies agreed with “high confidence” that Russia had led a disinformation campaign against Joe Biden and specifically cites Andrii Derkach as a Russian operative. Derkach and Giuliani were known to collaborate, but the report mentions no specific mention of Hunter Biden or his laptop.
