    IMO your arguement is ideological and has no basis in economic reality:
    (a) during the 1950s we had very high levels of immigration and the following
    decade of the 1960s we had an economic boom with a decade's GDP growth of 5%+
    P/A.

    (b) The only decade that Aus recorder such economic growth previously was in the 1860's
    (gold Rush) when Aus had the highest GDP per capita in the world and, by the way
    the population of Victoria then was bigger than the population of California.
    Just look at California today with a population of 39.2 million (45% higher than Australia)
    and a GDP of $4.1 trillion AUD....2.25 times bigger than Aus.

    This is directly related to its massive rate of immigration from 1860s to present.

    In post industrial societies economic growth is based more on consumption (demand from growing populations) rather
    than production (supply). Just have a look at the current USA trend?
