I don't think the West want Ukraine involved in a proxy war, as a more unequal contest could hardly be imagined.
No serious strategist would believe that Ukraine - before the start of this monstrous invasion - would be able to fight a protracted war against one of the largest nations and armies on the planet.

With alt-right people, cynicism and paranoia are defining traits. Europe is united in genuine outrage at this attack. There is genuine fury and a real determination to hit Putin economically, no matter what economic pain may be in store for Europe as a result.

If NATO and / or the US were to supply troops, it would simply allow the alt-right traitors to paint NATO and / or the US as aggressors and warmongers. It is an absolute no-win situation because the alt-right traitors will damn NATO / Europe / the West / the US no matter what. They are in the Russian camp, aligning with a despot.

You write as if Putin's invasion had to happen. It did not. It is the decision of one man with dreams of empire. Nobody is responsible for the violent actions of Putin except Putin. We do not blame the rape victim for the rape.
