"Ukraine joining NATO is like Mexico joining USSR"
Actually it is very similar to USSR planning to put missiles in Cuba in the 60's.
You have a point, and Putin COULD make this argument. But the 64 dollar question, is why didn't he? Russia has been protesting the westernisation of Ukraine (NATO and EU) since about 2008, but why didn't he take this matter to the UN prior to military actions. He would have generated a LOT more sympathy for his cause BEFORE moving into Ukraine.
But he didn't. My reasoning is that Putin is a thug by nature and is not interested in any civilised to and fro between nations. He wants to annex whatever he can, and exert control over as many people and assets that he can, exactly as he has done to the Russian people over many years.
The world will be better off with one less dictator in the world. Let's hope the Russians can deal with him sometime soon. Some good might then come out of this war.
