Good thread@@Euph - it's always wise to be thinking about these things. Macro political forces have a way of sharpening the focus, particularly on vanity projects of western governments. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the resultant implications for the supply of gas have exposed western Europe like a Portuguese Chicken. No question the Russian invasion changes things - but not necessarily for the worse. We're seeing increase in demand for alternatives to gas from the Soviets - as evidenced by the spot price. Only time will tell how this will play out but I can't see the need for the supply of gas diminishing. As for the relationship between China and Russia, the Chinese will nod to Russia as long as it suits them and they'll wipe them like a dirty ar*e when it suits them as well. While the Chinese haven't condemned Russia, they certainly haven't supported them either. Putin has also demonstrated the dangers of being reliant on him for pretty much anything and given a clear indication what China could expect if it went down a similar path. I don't think they're too many autocrats who would want to find themselves in a similar position to that which Putin finds himself in.
