Good to see some discussion on renewables. But how do they become affordable. They can't compete against coal and gas because there is no level playing field. So withy no ETS or equivalent how do we get there? The RET (renewable energy target) will help because it introduces a penalty cost if your quota of rewnewable generation for the year is not met. But we also need to a scheme to help reduce emissions, in my opinion.

On the subject of marine energy, the only listed wave energy producer here in Aus has recently been hammered because they missed out on funds from the REDP (renewable energy development programme). The funds were instead awarded to an OS company that has a track record of not delivering. Now they will be focussing their efforts overseas.

But two of the largest ASX listed geothermal energy companies have received large REDP grants. I note not much mention of geothermal here on this thread. It has a massive potential in this country and yes HVDC will be needed in all likelihood to transmit the power efficiently from their remote locations. As PPH has said, it is a political and economic issue, not a technical one.

P.S. I checked out Wilson Tuckey's web site. I am originally from WA myself and may others always thought he was a far right loony, but he has a good presentation on renewable energy and as the poster mentioned above, he is very keen on tidal energy for the Kimberley. Bring it on I say! Now, let's see how he can do it without an ETS. I'd like to see that. Honestly, I would.

P.P.S. I always thought Tuckey was a climate change denier, but his web site suggest otherwise. Is he simply reflecting the will of his electorate? Does he not agree withy Barnaby Joyce and Steve Fielding?
