I watched that auction, it was very entertaining. Yes, the large orders on both sides were clearly not genuine. Is that "manipulation"? Maybe, maybe not, depends how do you define it. Look at the outcome though: broker picked up a few shares at a good price (daily low) for their client using the automated trading.
Moral of the story is don't place a limit order if you're not happy with the limit.
