I was in kazakhstan in 2000 - the oligarchs had a foothold, the president, like many was a pick of the soviet union, and the poverty was unbelievable but with a massive contrast in wealth. I saw women on the roadside - not far from the designer shops and luxury homes that had sprung up who were selling second hand underwear (in pretty ordinary condition) and berries. oligarchy was enabled but accompanied as you say by lawless behaviour and thugs. to suggest that this was a problem in Ukraine alone ignores the role that the oligarchy had in russia and in Putin's wealth and power. the west has been a convenient safe haven for all because they all know that soviet leadership is unreliable - offend and you disappear or get poisoned. if your are suggesting that the corruption is a reason to invade I guess its a free for all and russia is an appropriate target. after all kiev existed long before moscow ever did

exactly, the problem with socialism and communism is that there is a massive redistribution of wealth. Which generally means it is the people doing the redistribution that gets really really rich (see Putin) and the poor gets poorer. That is why they have to stop news/information flow because they need to hide their own corruption
