3 decades ago I was incredibly in Berlin on a special trip to Europe when President Gorbachev had disappeared, had been ‘kidnapped’, and the world was worried and distressed for his safety.
On the eastern side of the Brandenburg gate thousands gathered in light rain, with candles, and sat in vigil outside the Russian embassy, with placards expressing everyone’s thoughts.
The relief was enormous when he( Gorbachev) was released and safe in Russia ( the Soviet Union) and tensions disappeared.
The history of the past 80 years then was well-known.
