You may be interested to know how grading works in Victoria. We have a letter system A to E, very similar to when I was at school in the UK.
Except it is NOT the same as in the UK, as in the UK an A was given to the bright students, and an E to those who were not achieving as they should or could.
Here a 'C' denotes that the child is achieving the standard required of them for their year group, based on the average of all children in Victoria. (Or something like that, I am still having a problem getting my head round it).
My 9 year old daughter is without doubt an A grade student. She came home in tears because her teacher had given her all Cs on her report. I questioned him. He said to achieve a B she would have to be performing a year ahead of herself, and to get an A 2 years ahead of herself.
But here's the thing : they don't teach the children a curriculum 1 or 2 years ahead, so in effect, he conceded that she would NEVER get an A.
It made me sooooo mad as it seems bright children are not given any encouragement. BTW she did some NAPLAN tests which do rate them against othhr children in same year and her results were OFF THE CHART - she IS exceptionally bright. But under current marking system she will always be a C grade girl.
