For the record, the GFC turned around when Obama threatened action against 'exec. remuneration'and 'investment havens' which would not cooperate with USA tax investigators - what does that say?
As for Barnaby Joyce's latest outbursts, IMO his main asset is his mouth - just add a bit of lippy & clothes with polka dots & the clown is fully exposed [lol].
IMO there are much bigger problems than debt in our capitalist economic systems: black markets, secretive bank accounts, money laundering, ponzi schemes, phoenix companies, workers wages controls vs free range exec remuneration, parliaments filled with people from legal and financial backgrounds, .... not to mention inequities, poverty & environmental unsustainability.
Of course we could also ask which financial institution emerged fastest & strongest from the GFC, restoring all those exec. bonuses & quickly repaying TARP monies. This cynic is more concerned about its behaviour than Barnaby Joyce polluting the media about debt.
