It's less about money than it is about the behaviour of students together with the inability or power which teachers can adopt to make their classrooms more effective places of learning. Students enjoy their power to misbehave and do so with gay abandon. Some class members, who may otherwise made fine teachers, look on silently and often confide in their teachers and even their parents as to why they never wish to become teachers themselves.

It's too tough a gig.

No career path, certainly, but a few years teaching in a public school is not an attractive option to many intelligent, conscientious, high achieving, university graduates.
