NATO hasn't absorbed any countries. There is no territorial conquest. That is what Russia does.

Countries have - of their own free will - joined NATO for the security it provides against aggression.

Article 5 provides security and safety against the kind of aggression we have seen Russia unleash upon Ukraine.

The great shame in all this is that Ukraine unfortunately was not a NATO member, so did not have the blanket of security that Article 5 affords.
