He doesn't want the old USSR. What He doesn't want is missiles and military hardware surrounding his borders. NATO is there to protect against Russian aggresion, yet NATO have been moving east, poking the bear at every stage. If Russia was so volitile, why would Germany, the country that was divided in half because of Russia be buying 60% of their gas from there, even during this crisis!
