Good old geography. The bottom line is, the Soviet Union/Russia never agreed with the NATO expansion eastwards. In the past, they were not strong enough military or economically to prevent it from happening.
This time is different. They acted and the West is forced to listen. Unfortunately, poor people of Ukraine are paying the price.
