Oh, we are all so different. I was extremely shy.

If my mum told me off, it would upset me greatly. A teacher discipling me? Don't recalled it ever happening. We were never permitted to sulk after a "straightening out" so hiding in our room and crying in the pillow was never an option, we had to "deal with it" and continue to interact with the family.

My mum saw herself in me and was anxious for me to change and not suffer shyness. I believe I am quite a distance down that scale towards the introversion end. It differs significantly from shyness but can be mistaken for it, particularly when very young.

Introversion kept me at the university as a student and for a period, in an academic position. There have been studies showing introverted students perform better than extraverted but, if course, this is a generalisation and other factors come into play.

Teachers would smack little girls over their knuckles if they misbehaved and boys sent to the Principal's office for three of the best. Translation? Three whacks with a strap on to the hand. I felt sorry for the boys because they needed to walk down the passage to the Principal's office all alone for a supposed transgression by a different person, awaiting some violence on his person. It was wrong.
