DSTs allow for them to assess some basics properties of the oil/gas bearing zones. Its expensive to do when you are all the way out at sea and paying hefty rig rates. They can run wireline logs and gain some indication of the zones that they have encountered. I would guess they could also grab some core samples, but I am unsure of how this works in conventional drilling or if it is common practice.
