Russia is not an imperialist country.
Russian capitalism is very weak and the oligarchs that Putin represents just want to be left alone to exploit Russia, the largest country by land area in the world and with a vast wealth of natural resources.
Russian capitalism wanted a neutral buffer around them.
Yes Germany was exploiting Russian working class and resources hand in hand with Russian oligarchs for 3 decades, but that is out the window now and it's a race to "annex" all of Russia.
Bit like the race by European powers to colonise Africa in the 1800's, but this time Russia.
