My grandparents lived a terraced house in Portsmouth, UK.
As a child I remember the small narrow garden and it's jet black soil full of beautiful flowers and vegetables. I was told it was attributable to the family 'waste' being regularly dug into the soil over the years until the street was switched to deep sewerage. Why should human waste be any less beneficial than any other animal waste and why would it be harmful by comparison?
If it's dug into the soil raw it needs to be left to be broken down naturally but that's the only cautious measure I can think of.
