I doubt many of the anti Putin posters will argue that the US has behaved like choir boys in the past. They have made many mistakes that they have also learned from. The US actions have often been as part of UN sanctioned coalitions. The Russian action in Ukraine on the other hand has been condemned by the UN with only 4 nations voting with Russia against the resolution to condemn the war, and what a wonderful bunch of misfits they are: North Korea, Eritrea, Syria and Belarus.

The big difference of the US action in Afghanistan is that it was part of the war on terror, which wasn't clearly defined by land borders as most wars are. The US was attacked on its own soil and decided to defend itself by hunting down Al-Qaeda. Afghanistan supported the terrorists and provided refuge to Al-Qaeda operatives. The Taliban still has strong ties with Al-Qaeda today. When Russia invaded Afghanistan in 1979 it killed 1 million civilians over the following decade btw, but I presume that isn't an issue for you. Al-Qaeda began as an organisation to fight against the Russians when they invaded Afghanistan, so the Russians were actually indirectly responsible for the wave of Muslim terror that has taken place ever since. I look at the US actions in Afghanistan with critical eyes and condemn many of their actions, but they had far more reason being there than Russia has for invading Ukraine. The US actions were not motivated by imperialism, but the Russian actions in Chechnya, Georgia, Crimea and now Ukraine most definitely are.
