A US vs Russia war would be the shortest war in history; a mutual exchange of nuclear warheads resulting in total the total devastation of both countries & probably the world as well. The US understands this, and they have never had any attention of attacking Russia.

Putin gets this as well, no question.

But he's busily created a myth around him about the cornered rat being unpredictable and dangerous.

He's behaving like the failed autocrat that he is. Putin made the mistake of encouraging lies and exaggerations under his administration, (to cater to his ego), and then believing them. Now he blames them, part of his strategy if he has to face trial for war crimes.
He was misled, troops were disorderly, troops acting under own volition etc.

Putin's a cunning rat. That bit is true.
