As occurs mostly these days the patient or their family make the decisions from the information provided by their doctors. In my case the cardiologists and cardiac surgeons informed me that I could have either a bio prosthetic valve (cow or pig) or a mechanical valve. They did not mention a human one. Not sure but I think the choice of cow or pig just relates to current availability (and possibly the religion of the recipient).
I was informed that the life of bio prosthetic valves is somewhere between 10-20 years and that for young people they will probably require a valve replacement in their lifetime. I was also informed that for those who choose a man-made mechanical valve, there is an increased risk of clots forming and to reduce this problem patients are required to be on Warfarin for life. Having no idea what being continually on Warfarin would be like that was not in my mind when making the decision. However, as previously posted my INR levels were quite labile and constant testing, GP visits, watching very carefully to avoid certain foods and adjustments to the medication were required. This is a common problem for many patients, although some also report extremely stable INR levels. Given this information, as I was 70 years old at the time, I opted for a bio prosthetic valve and was given one from a cow. I was very relieved to only be on the Warfarin for around a month from memory and very thankful that I wouldn't have to take it for life.
My point in terms of investing in Arteris is that most patients requiring aorta valve replacement ar likely to be in the older age category and like me are most likely to choose a bio prosthetic valve. One should not assume that because the Arteris valves perform better than their competition that all valve replacements will be Arteris ones.
So I would like to know, from the company, if their valve recipients need to be on Warfarin for life as it has a direct link to sales. I could call the company, but the question is an appropriate one for the AGM as it also relates to investment.
