It's hard to be really sympathetic to a person carrying such a large quantity of hard drugs, although we can still feel sympathy for his family. It begs the question as to whether such a large quantity of drugs was only for personal use. Anyone going to China must know of the extreme danger if caught in possession of narcotics.
We in the West have encouraged such irresponsible behaviour by our laughable soft approach to drug taking and drug pushers.
