The Opposition has been in a slow decline for over two years now and there are no signs of any change of trend.

The government could call an early election and win comfortably, or they could wait another year and win comfortably.

Either way the government is unlikely to win control of the Senate where the Greens will most likely win the balance of power.

The Coalition will then become irrelevant.
