It's not only the huge cost for a pumped hydro, it would be competing with Vanadium redox batteries (VRFB's) that would be considerably cheaper to buy and to operate (also they don't catch fire like Lithium ion batteries). That's why Vanadium mining stocks are running hot at the moment.
