Not everyone wants to trash the planet. We've all seen plenty of examples of how badly various mining companies have behaved in the past.
E.g. Exxon Valdez. . BP Macondo. Montara oil spill in the Timor sea. Etc.
Nothing wrong with stricter rules as we go forward. Just as there is for safety in the workplace, in the construction industry, drinking and drug driving road rules etc. Not all of us want to live in the past.
New coal mines, new oil fields etc have gone ahead despite all this alleged interference that you speak of. They continue to be established today.
