What was your expectation at the time about home ownership? I'm approaching 70 and recall that home loans in the past were rationed by the banks using funds sourced from retiree savings with options to borrow elsewhere for higher interest rates for shorter periods.
That changed when banks were allowed to borrow short term from overseas to lend long.
My kids got a leg up into the housing market taking turns using one of my rental properties rent free and using the bank of Mum and Dad to help with deposits. With the current value of houses they will get a further boost when Mum and Dad hit the bucket. Part of the looming record generational transfer of wealth as baby boomers cark it.
