Given that both my wife and myself have disabilities I sincerely hope that no member if your family ever suffers this fate.
The outrage as you put it, is in my opinion, simply people who only think in terms of themselves and simply espouse the opposite of what everyday Australians think and believe in.It is nothing to do with "modern day politics" rather it is to do with having respect for fellow human beings who are less advantaged then oneself.
In fact, quoting from Little Dorritt, by Charles Dickens- “I am self-contained and self-reliant; your opinion is nothing to me; I have no interest in you, care nothing for you, and see and hear you with indifference.”
