In brief, you want institutions present but you don’t want a small number of holders cornering the stock.
To really be of interest to the big end of town, a stock needs liquidity; the ability for people to enter/exit largish positions without crashing or spiking the share price. So whilst it’s good to have a ‘tightly held’ stock, there is a balance to it.
