just to weigh in on the temporary tailings storage. All dangerous goods can only be temporarily stored under commonwealth legislation. They are to be stored until such time as they can be remediated or converted to a neutral form - usually using new technology. The big thing that WA has is a waste management final storage place that no other state in Australia has. It’s called Mt Walton. In my last job in Govt I was in charge of this facility. It’s a storage of last resort. That is, once it is proven that the tailings can not be remediated nor altered in its form, it can be stored permanently there. It becomes intractable. That facility employs world class standards for storage and has licenses with ARPANSA and must report on the Nuclear Non Proliferation Agreement. We have already stored such things as obsolete but radioactive equipment used in medicine, arsenic etc. it’s located in a geographic location that does not impact ground water (due to its clay base and other properties) and is very stable. It’s a couple of hundred kilometres north east of southern cross. So there is hope!
