The reasons that there are so many lawyers in politics are: (a) they want to be law makers rather than law practicers/takers (b) they are trained debaters (c) there is little or no wage drop for a solicitor entering politics
The bottom line for me is that I'd prefer a lawyer/politician than a grunt labourer!
