I think the idea is to use ukraine as cannon fodder to deplete RF arsenal and weaken the strength of the RF military and equipment to some extent before NATO enters the war proper. Test NATO tactics and gather intel on RF tactics and weapons.

Biden needs a war to salvage US elections and all the easy wars are done and dusted. Ukraine is the new Afghanistan.
Rich in resources and in a handy strategic location to push Russia into a corner and destabilise it.

Biden sent Putin a signal that he was OK for a limited war in Donbass - its what Biden needed to distract from a collapsing economy and give some hope in the mid terms. I think he doesnt have a plan for how it ends though. He slipped telling US troops in poland they were going to Ukraine...or was it just more mad ramblings? we shall see.

Sadly It feels like ww3 has commenced....
