mTOR medication projects are notoirious for their high failure rate because of said issues that prove impossible to overcome. Elanco was under huge financial pressure at the time because 1. enormously costly takeover of Bayer, 2. struggling sales, 3. facing a multibillion dollar court action from disgruntled investors who said that they had been lied to about the company's financial position.
Now when huge, complex and costly mergers happen between corporations, it is quite normal to put a red line through any projects that are not "core" and to "focus". Add conditions 2 and 3 and you can see Elanco was under enormous financial pressure. Given that the results of the 2020 dog trial were bedeviled by the usual mTOR complications that had killed many a project, why would a company like Elanco under the huge fiancial pressure it was, commit to a project that might not even be able to produce and commercially useful drug?
Anyway, just my opinion. You could be right, maybe there's something fundamentally no good about mpl for dogs. Maybe in 2020, but I think things have changed since. I could be wrong. Who knows?
