Recognising that AML is one of the hardest to treat cancers, 5 of the 7 patients in the last study (Spaedea et al 1993) achieved Complete (within 15 to 54 days of treatment) and two of these had no progression (relapse) of disease at 42+ and 46+ months respectively.

This was a single-agent trial:



I speculate a key reason for the number of CRs achieved was the application of the consolidation course. It could also be that the 2 patients that achieved 42+ and 46+ months progression free may have coincidentally over expressed FTO (but this is just speculation).

The paper doesn't give any information about any follow-up bone marrow transplants the patients received.

The 5-year survival rate tells you what percent of people live at least 5 years after the cancer is found. Percent means how many out of 100. The 5-year survival rate for people 20 and older with AML is 27%. For people younger than 20, the survival rate is 69%.​

So RACE have in their hands an asset with some compelling historic complete response rates for a deadly cancer, including as a single-agent. Complete Response = no detectable cancer.​
