Australia will never build another coal power plant on our soil. All current cpp’s will be “allowed” to come to their useful end ie either they break down and are too expensive to repair or they become highly uneconomic to run (most likely for most by 2040).
“The plan” would be to replace/increase MW of generation with renewables, in particular, solar (cover as much unused inner land mass that is close enough to current and future expanded grid) and wind turbines (land and sea) which require REs as outlined in earlier post. Of course the battery metals will be in huge demand, as well as the land areas required to house them, including the old cpp sites (ie AGL plan).
Whatever way one looks at it, it’s gonna happen, yes it may happen slightly faster under Lab/Grn/Ind government. 2-5 yrs faster maybe, the unanswered question is at what monetary cost v savings from fewer/less severe adverse climate events. A question that we can never really answer with certainty or high accuracy (a bit like the question “I wonder how many COVID deaths would there have been if we had never locked down?”
